| | There is a city on the Volga river different from the others. It doesnt
have a Russian name, which confuses those who have heard about it for the
first time. Not so long ago the city was renowned for its rapidly growing
chemical and automotive industries. However, during the last years there
have been rumors about Togliatti due to other reasons. Perhaps, because
here they have taken the initiatives in the matters of culture, art, and
education. Several years ago it was here in Togliatti that the Childrens
Art Assembly gathered for its contests young musicians, artists, writers
from many of the Russian cities. For many years organizations of Togliatti
have collaborated with the international charity program
«New Names», Vladimir Spivakov Fund, and Vladimir
Kraynev Fund. In 1998 the Summer Art School «New Names of Togliatti»
was organized, which became a logical sequel to all the previous work.
Many distinguished Russian educators took interest in it, making it their
duty to come and support the new initiative and those who will have a say
in art in the third millennium. The Summer Art School is a synthesis of
arts, unity of tutors and students, individual lessons and master classes,
conversazioni, exhibitions and concerts, new works of art, born during
the days of the Summer School, friendship and creation, a new understanding
of art and its role in the life of a child, who is making his first steps
in music, painting, literature... The Summer Art School is a special form
of
inspiration which is experienced by both
students and tutors, its an important step towards high aims.
The great Russian painter Ilya Repin called the place where Togliatti
is located now «a glory of Russia.» The ancient mountains and
the grand river leave an unforgettable
impression, improve creativity, and it matures near the natural grandeur
and beauty.
The Summer Art School «New Names of Togliatti» offers classes
for musicians of different specialities - pianists, strings, folk musicians,
vocalists, composers, - as well as painters and writers. Their tutors are
educators whose names are known not only in Russia, but also in other countries.
The art director is Lev Borisovich Evgrafov, Honored Artist of the USSR,
International Pablo Casals contest prizewinner, Professor at Moscow State
Conservatoire named after Tchaikovsky, Head of Department of Strings in
Moscow State Music Institute named after Schnitke, President of World Childrens
Symphony Orchestra. His students have won many top international contests,
and the names of Alexander Roudimov, Victoria Yagling, Ivan Monigetti,
Claudio Baraviera are world-renown. Such educators as Moscow State Conservatoire
professors Valery Kastelsky (piano), Lev Evgrafov (violoncello), Tatiana
Choudova (composition), tutors Daniyl Kramer (jazz improvisation) and Ariadna
Anchevskaya (violin), worked with the participants of the Summer School-98.
Elena Kochergina, Head of Chamber Ensemble Department of the Central Music
School at Moscow Conservatoire as well as Valery Pyasetsky (piano) and
Yury Shishkin (button accordion) who represent Rostov State Conservatoire,
taught the chamber ensemble class.
The young singers were taught by the creator of his own vocalist school
Victor Emelyanov, and those who play the flute - by Assistant Professor
at the Samara Culture and Art Academy, Honored Artist of Russia, Victor
Drozhnikov. Poetry lessons were given by the art director of the Literary
Studio at the State Childrens Library Tatyana Koteneva (Moscow).
The painters were tutored by muscovite
educators, members of the Commonwealth
of Artists of Russia, Sergey Chernyshev and Valery Geraskevich.
For the young musicians, the Summer Art School-99 is associated with
such teachers as Alexander Alexandrov - Honored Artist of Russia, Professor
at Russian Music Academy named after Gnesins - and Leonid Tamulevich, Assistant
Professor at St. Petersburg Conservatoire named after Rimsky-Korsakov (piano);
Evgeniya Chougaeva, Professor at Vienna Music Academy, and Natalya Tatishcheva,
teacher
of Central Music Secondary School at Moscow State Conservatoire named
after Tchaikovsky (violin).
It should also be stated that the history of the city of Togliatti is
very closely related to the name of Vassily Tatishchev, the founder of
Stavropol-on-the-Volga (the former name of Togliatti), so it is very significant
that his direct descendant, Natalya Tatishcheva, took part in the Summer
School work.
The alto and chamber ensemble classes were taught by Elena Kochergina,
the violoncello and orchestra classes - by Lev Evgrafov.
Victor Drozhnikov, Honored Artist of Russia, Head of Orchestra Instruments
Department, Assistant Professor at Samara Culture and Art Academy (flute),
and Lois Lynn Alexander, Professor at Michigan University, Flint, USA,
(baritone tuba), instructed the wind instruments classes.
The button accordion class was taught by Anatoly Zaikin, Honored Artist
of Russia, prizewinner of Russian and international
contests (Rostov State Conservatoire named after Rakhmaninov).
The domra and balalaika players learned their lessons with the help
of Shavkat Amirov, Professor at Kazan State Conservatoire, Head of
the Folk Instruments Department, Honored Artist of Russia, prizewinner
of Russian and international contests.
The young composers were taught by Vladislav Agafonnikov, Peoples Artist
of Russia, Professor at Moscow State Conservatoire named after Tchaikovsky,
and the jazz improvisation class, by Daniyl Kramer, Honored Artist of Russia,
prizewinner of international jazz festivals, teacher at Moscow State Conservatoire.
Raisa Ermolaeva, the last student of Antonina Nezhdanova, teacher at
Samara Culture and Art Academy, soloist at Samara State Philharmonic, taught
academic singing at
the Summer School.
For the first time at the Summer Art
School-99 its participants could play along with the World Childrens
Orchestra.
This childrens professional ensemble, which is unique in the world,
was established in January 1994 by the International Musicians Union with
co-operation of Moscow State Conservatoire named after Tchaikovsky.
During the five years of its existence, the orchestra has practiced
and performed the most difficult symphonic programs, that can only be performed
by highly trained professional orchestras, appeared in the best concert
halls of Russia, as well as Italy and Japan. In 1998 the orchestra performed
together with Montserrat Caballe in the opening of
the International Tchaikovsky contest.
The Childrens Orchestra has in their repertoire complicated compositions
by Mozart, Schubert, Weberg, Wagner, Grieg, Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Lyadov,
Prokofiev, Shostakovitch, Sviridov, Stravinsky, that they perform with
skill and excellence very unusual for musicians of their age.
President of the Orchestra Lev Evgrafov, Honored Artist of the USSR,
International Pablo Casals contest prizewinner, is a brilliant and outstanding
musician whose mastery is world-renown and has become nowadays a part of
the Russian national music culture.
